Just one more bloomin’ photo….

I couldn’t resist the pun – sorry!  And if English is not your native language, don’t worry, you aren’t missing out on much. I had the opportunity to visit the flower auction near Amsterdam the other day (what else do you do when you are stuck in Amsterdam and your conference doesn’t start until 4pm?)  This is not a little auction that you hear brides to be talk about with glee because they saved a load of money buying their flowers wholesale. This is the big brother of those auctions – the huge commercial version with international bidders and its own type of bidding language. The warehouse alone was bigger than I wanted to walk. The tourist section is, I believe about half a mile……one way. I went really late in the morning (0900) so the warehouse was already more than half empty, but the scale of it was impressive not to mention the delicate scent of the flowers – not overpowering the way you would think!

A rose is a rose is a rose... Not bloody likely! They had supervisors checking carts and everything is computerised and just in time delivery. I saw flowers in boxes (anthuriums), flowers in vases of water, but most of them were in these plastic buckets

There were two bays like this at either end of one portion of the warehouse (the walkway did not go to the end nor did it go into the other warehouses). The carts came forward like candy in a vending machine and the little scooter/forklift things would back up and latch on and zoooooom away.

I kept wondering how many tourists dropped things into the moving carts and no one ever knew....
